Tonight: The Christmas Tree Challenge
The Olympia International Show Jumping Championships are held between 17 and 21
December at the Grand Hall of the Olympia complex in the London Borough of
Kensington which celebrated its centenary in 1986. Christmas is the most magical
time of the year. And show jumping at Olympia is the most exciting indoor event
of the calendar. So the two together promise to be a most enchanting occasion.
The Olympia International Show Jumping Championships, now in its 27th year, are
a clever mix of fast and furious, closely fought sporting action and exciting
and entertaining displays. The thrills come from world class international show
jumping. Edge of the seat events like the famous World Cup Qualifier, the
breathtaking Puissance and the big-prize Traxdata Grand Prix, are all in a
packed daily programme. Here is the programme: - Thursday: The Christmas Tree
Challenge (a jump-off class) - Friday: the Christmas Puissance (a high jump
contest) - Saturday: the Traxdata World Cup Qualifier - Sunday: The Father
Christmas Stakes (a jump-off class) - Monday: the Traxdata Grand Prix
(previously named Olympia Grand Prix) The competitionsfrom Thursday to Sunday
are qualifying events for the Traxdata Grand Prix. Thus the very best riders of
the first four days will participate on Monday. The prize money of the Traxdata
Grand Prix is њ50,000 (for a total of њ250,000!..). Eurosport is the host
broadcaster and the Eurosport / Lalique Trophy is given to the leading rider on
points after the five days of competitions. This Trophy was won last year by
Ludger Beerbaum (Germany) also winner of the World Cup qualifier, whereas the
Olympia Grand Prix was captured by British-born German rider Helena Weinberg.
The Olympia International Show Jumping Championships always meet a great popular
success.The avearage audience is 12,000 people each afternoon and each evening
during fivedays, which means a total of 120,000! The '97 edition brought ratings
